Preparing for Winter!

Winter, a cold and wet season, will be here before you know it! As always cold temperatures and lots of snow should be expected. And remember, different rules are used for recess at MSS. Are you ready?
One of the things you should have to play in the snow is a warm, winter, jacket. Temperatures can drop fast, and usually by late December it’s cold! Cold temperatures can last through January, February, and usually into early March. That’s a long time to be cold if you don’t have a jacket!
Snow pants are also something you should have. Snow isn’t uncommon in New Hampshire and it’s fun to play in- if you have the right clothes. Snow pants keep you warm and dry to some extent, allowing the wearer to play in the snow- without getting completely soaked! Snow pants can be avoided if you want to stay on the pavement during recess.
Snow boots are good to have. Even those opting to stay on the tar all winter should have them, and they are a necessity for those going in the snow, as they keep your feet dry. The pavement is slushy and wet all winter and sneakers won’t keep your feet dry!
Gloves are great for winter. Fingers are some of the more vulnerable parts of your body, and get cold easily. Gloves keep your fingers warm in the freezing temperatures and waterproof ones keep you dry in the snow, even when the wearer is handling snow to make snowballs, snowmen, other things, or even just being in the snow.
Hats are good to have, though not as needed as some other pieces of clothing. They keep your head warm and contribute to your overall body heat as well. Most of your body heat that leaves you, leaves through your head on cold days, but a hat traps it in. Hats are also good for keeping your snow out of your hair, often a risk for those playing in the snow.
These things are all good to have, but you need to know more to be completely ready for the chilly season blowing our way!
There are new rules at MSS during the winter. These rules are designed for different purposes, but mostly to keep the school playground safe with the new addition of snow all over it. Playground rules stay the same but some new ones are added. These are some of the new rules. Kids are not allowed on the snow during recess without snow pants and boots. The giant piles of snow at the end of the basketball courts and the end of the parking lot are fine to slide down, but not on the side facing the parking lot. Throwing snow is not tolerated (someone could get hit in the head with a chunk of ice). For those who need financial assistance getting winter clothes, you should contact Mrs. Bresaw, director of the Human Services by calling 746-5729.
Plenty of snow, ice, and wind is our way, but you now know what to expect. I hope that you’ll be prepared when winter is here!
