Sports at MSS
by Hadley
The students at MSS play mainly three different team sports in the fall. Some are middle-school based, but others are only for students at MSS.
SOCCER:
In Hopkinton, we have two soccer programs. Each program has great soccer players who are learning many things.
The first program is HYSA. HYSA has 21 teams, ages ranging from 2-12 years. There is one third and fourth-grade girls' team, with 14 people. They have won 1 game, lost 4 games, and tied 3 games. There are third and fourth-grade boys' teams, red and blue. The red team has won 5 and lost 2 games. The blue team has 2 wins, 5 loses and 1 tie. On the red team, there are 7 players, and on the blue team there are 9 players. In fifth grade, the girls have 11 players. They have won 3 games, lost 5, and tied 2 games. The boys in fifth grade play with the boys in sixth grade, and they have won 2 games and lost 8. They have 16 players. The last HYSA soccer team is the sixth grade girls, with 10 players. They have won 6 games, lost 2, and tied 2.
The other one, HSC, (Hopkinton Soccer Club) has a fourth-grade team, a fifth-grade team and a sixth-grade team. The sixth-grade HSC girls team has lost one game and won the others. The sixth-grade boys HSC team is undefeated.
FIELD HOCKEY:
In field hockey, there are two programs. Buddy field hockey is for students from grades 1-6 who have never really played field hockey, and want to try it out. For girls who know they want to play, there is a fifth and sixth-grade team. Though, there are some fourth graders who are on the team. Because they are a new team, it is harder for their coach, Coach Chase, the middle school gym teacher, to find lots of games to play. So far, the team has had three games. They have won all of their games. In the first game, they played Bow. The score was 5-0, though Bow played a tremendous game. John Stark was the second team they played. They had a goalie, so it was harder to score. The ending score was 2-0. Their latest game, against Merrimack Valley, was 6-0. At a tournament, the girls played Bow and the Amherst Cave Girls. Both games were only twenty-five minutes long. The Cave Girls got one goal in, but it just barely went in. The score was 4-1, Hopkinton. The third time they played Bow, they won 5-0. The girls on our field hockey team are undefeated by a long shot, and kept that up the whole season.
CROSS COUNTRY:
Cross country is a middle school based sport, but we have a few sixth graders on the team. They have meets at least once a week. It is run by Ms. Lemire, an instructional assistant at MSS. The sixth graders on the team are Cailey Stockwell, Anna O’Reilly, Andrew Zankel, Ethan Molnar, Jessie Carney, Kally Murdough and Sean Rogers. So far, the team has been doing very well at their meets.
